Moxie Cinema: Two years strong today
Written by Dan
Two years ago today, on September 21, 2005, The Moxie officially opened its doors to the public after nearly a year's worth of start-up delays. Now, two year's on, I find myself sitting in the waiting room of St. John's urgent care center, painstakingly typing this blog post into my new web-enabled phone with what seems to be the world's smallest keypad. I suppose that's the price you pay for new technology.
EDIT: Now I'm in the patient room, waiting for the doctor. I'm here to get an allergy shot (hopefully), although they just informed me that my blood pressure was alarmingly high (145/93). I don't know... probably a side effect from one of the five over-the-counter allergy medicines coursing through my veins. Now they have me worried though... damn nurses and their paranoia-inducing bedside manner. I hear them laughing outside the door -- probably joking about how my heart is going to explode any minute now. It's getting increasingly difficult to type as my hands are becoming more and more sweaty.
Now, where was I? Ah yes, ye olde Moxie and the momentous day. We went all out last year, with a week's worth of activities to celebrate our big one year. The reason being the fact that the majority of small businesses fail within their first 12 months, so we felt we owed it to ourselves, and our supportive customers, to mark the occasion appropriately. That last sentence sounds terribly labored, but it's too hard to erase it all on this little keypad!
EDIT: Doctor says my high blood pressure was caused by all the Sudafed I took today. No worries... and no allergy shot either. :( I did, however, get some Allegra and steroid nasal spray. Hopefully it will start working soon.
So, the second year is important as well, but we didn't feel any real pressing need to celebrate as lavishly as last year. We did, however, offer $0.50 popcorn to everyone on our e-mail list, so that's something. I like that... saying "however" all the time... it's something I do a lot when I talk too.... but that's neither here nor there... and I'm getting off topic.
After having successfully weathered out another year of working seven days a week, and spending nearly every waking hour with each other, which isn't as easy or pleasant as it may seem, Nicole and I are taking a mini-vacation starting tomorrow. We'll be heading up to St. Louis for a day (Nic's in a crafts show, and we'll be visiting and staying with friends), and then on Sunday we'll be flying to the BIG APPLE (our first time) to see a Bjork concert on Monday night! Also, while we're in New York, we're going to meet with several of our distributors who have offices in Manhattan (Fox, Sony, Magnolia, etc.). So it's half business / half fun -- although the fun will outweigh the business... as it should. It's a much-needed break, and the sole reason I went to the urgent care center tonight. No one wants to have an allergy attack during their first trip to the big city.
And that's it. I have a lot of stuff that I need to get ready for our fateful employees, who will be captaining the USS Moxie while we're on shore-leave, so I best get to work. If you guys have any tips on where we should go while we're in NYC, feel free to leave them in the comments.
Thanks for a great two years, and we look forward to bringing you many more fantastic cinematic experiences in the years to come.
