No More Teacher's Dirty Looks!

Written by Nicole

Hello everyone! It's me, Nicole. Dan's away tonight, and he accidentally gave me the password to the blog administrative site...ha ha, oh man. He's going to be surprised tomorrow! I could put pictures of Cillian Murphy all over this place...

Ahem. Anyways.

Things are buzzing with excitement over here at The Moxie. Besides the fact that Dan's gone for the night and Caleb and I drank half our stock of Cream Soda (what?), we're in the midst of many extraordinary events.

First, we've got CHALK, the hilarious Office-style film about high school, selling out its first two showings! We turned away some upset teachers tonight (and, though it's been about 8 years since high school, I still feel that hot flush of embarrassment when I disappoint a teacher). But on the plus side, I think we made a lot of teachers happy. Or at least, that's what the laughter coming from the auditorium indicated.

What we're excited about is on Sunday night at The Landers (311 E Walnut), we're hosting a Teacher Appreciation Night with CHALK. Tickets are $5 for teachers, standard admission for everyone else. AND some of the filmmakers, who happen to be SMSU alumni, will be in attendance. The film is hilarious, even if you aren't in the education field. And what's great is that it's not making fun of public schools, but is like a valentine to the teachers who persevere and love their jobs in education. Tickets for Sunday night's show are available only at The Landers, so you can call them (869-1334), stop in (311 E Walnut), or visit their website (http://www.springfieldlittletheatre.org).

Another event we're excited for just came together today, and we'll have more info later in July. We are partnering up with Wilson's Creek National Battlefield to help them celebrate their 100 year anniversary (and I thought the 8 years since high school was a long time!). We'll be showing a series of Civil War documentaries made by an Emmy-award winning crew from Kansas City, complete with guest speakers, enthusiasts, and, if you're lucky, maybe we'll throw in some Civil War hardtack...keep your eyes peeled for more information on this series. Oh yeah, and it will be FREE!

And lastly, something for you Harry Potter fans out there. If you haven't heard, the seventh and final installment of the Harry Potter books is being released at midnight, July 22. This is by far the biggest literary event of the century, possibly since the invention of the printing press, so downtown Springfield is celebrating it in a big way. Our block of Walnut and Campbell will transform into Diagon Alley (the major shopping district for wizards at Hogwarts). Springfield Hot Glass Studio will become Ollivander's Wand Shop, where Terry Bloodworth will create custom-made magic wands; Well Fed Head will be Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes where they'll whip up a good dose of tricks, contests, games, and of course, have copies of the book; Shires for Hire will be in town for the night giving carriage rides to the wannabe wizards...

And finally, The Moxie will become The Leaky Cauldron, showing Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and serving up some kid-friendly Butter Beer. And trust Caleb and me. It's good stuff. We should know - we drank quite a bit tonight.
