Mobile cinemas on the rise

Written by Dan

Moxie A Go-Go isn't the only mobile cinema on the scene (although some might argue that it's the best). The UK has quite a few, including this little one that operates out of a VW van. If I were to guess, I'd say the best known cinema on wheels belongs to the Alamo Drafthouse. They actually have TWO 35mm projectors running out of the back of a modified moving van.

For the more DIY spirits among you, there's been a recent upswing in guerilla theaters sprouting up around the US. The Santa Cruz version is currently the best known, but MobMov's are popping up all over the place. This Saturday's MaGG could also be considered a "guerilla drive-in," only it's 100% legal... and much cooler.

Maybe one day we'll be able to upgrade MaGG to something like this:

We could take Moxie movies all over Missouri! Ah, to be a millionaire.... Who wants to invest?! How sad is it that the second mobile cinema has more seats than our very un-mobile cinema... *sigh*

That is the chocolate bomb. That would THE place to watch Superman Returns (when the IMAX 3-D version isn't near), Pirates Of The Caribbean 2, Miami Vice and Apocalypto, but not the place to watch Snakes On A Plane (that's a screening with 300 screaming fans chanting and cheering when Uncle Sam says "I've had it with these m****rf****n' snakes on this m****rf****n' plane!").

Now, that's the coolest thing I've seen in a while.

Brick was a-mazing. Holy shish kabobs. Definitely the best movie I've seen at the Moxie this year. And some might disagree but I thought Gordon-Levitt's performance was Oscar-worthy, at least a nomination. Unfortunately, it's not eligible since it came out last year, right?

That soundtrack demands an award too.

Matthew Martin aka Master RJ says:

It came out in March, so it's eligible.

But it was in the festival circuit all through 2005, doesn't that disqualify it?

but it doesnt have near as much style...
or a cinebar! or an art gallery wall...

actually the first one looks fairly decent...
the second one makes me kind of nauseous...

Actually the festival circuit doesn't count as releases, just screenings. Example:Crash.

RJ, I hope you're right! That'd be sweet. Of course I could see the Academy snubbing it anyway. Here's to some Indie Spirits.

I realllly hope you guys can get Woody Allen's new film. The trailer looks hilarious. It looks like the perfect role for Scarlett. It might even bring her some award nominations??
