THREE

EXCERPT:  Three things to note: 1) Tonight is The Moxie's 100th day of operation. 2) One year ago today was our first full day in Springfield. 3) HAPPY NEW YEARS TO ALL! Here's hoping that 2006 will be a wonderful year for The Moxie and all of its supporters! Thank you. ...

Preshow slides

EXCERPT:  I'm not going to beat around the bush here. Our preshow ads, as funny as there are (were), are getting old. I threw together about a dozen of them way back in September, but haven't gotten around to making new ones for quite some time. So in the tradition of all things Moxie, I'm going to let the patients takeover the asylum... or some other such metaphor that equates to letting you build the ads yourself. Just think, your work could be seen by tens of tens of people! Your voracious wit could be splitting up several people before ...

Ivy League

EXCERPT:  The projector is fully operational again, thanks in large part to the expansive knowledge of my Uncle Sonny. Instead of having the broken coupling retooled (i.e. completely rebuilt from scratch), he suggested I buy a pre-made coupling from a local industrial supply store. Two hours and $10.00 later, the projector is working better than it ever has. I'd say the new coupling has decreased motor noise by at LEAST 200%... maybe more. It's also increased my happiness by 300%, which is a lot considering it had already been increased by 700% after the birth of my first niece, Ivy. I'm ...

A day that will live in infamy / infancy

EXCERPT:  Two HUGE events happened today. 1. Nicole and I became an aunt and uncle when my sister gave birth to a beautiful baby girl named Ivy at 8:08 pm. 1. At 8:30 pm, less than thirty minutes after my niece had arrived into this world, the Moxie's baby - our 35mm projector - broke like Saddam's prosecuting attorney. We had to cancel our 9:15 show (a first in Moxie history) and send 12 people home empty-handed. Why couldn't this have happened during THE WILD PARROTS OF TELEGRAPH HILL? I don't think anyone would've noticed had we canceled a ...

State of The Moxie #2 - October 2005

EXCERPT:  I've been working so hard on the new Moxie website that I completely lost track of time. I bet you guys were getting worried, weren't you! No? Really? Not even a little? Whatever. Can I make it up to you by divulging more of our attendance stats? Yeah. That's what I thought. September is water under the bridge, so let's jump straight into October, shall we: Week 3 - October 5 - 11 Movies: BROKEN FLOWERS, CINEMERGE FILM FESTIVAL, and SAVING FACE We: 72 (75 goal) = -3 Th: 51 (75 goal) = -24 Fr: 85 (75 ...

The Moxie is romantic

EXCERPT:  We had our first wedding proposal here at The Moxie on Sunday night. The guy, Jeff, told his then girlfriend, Michelle, that he had a very special Christmas present for her... a private showing of one of her favorite movies (SAY ANYTHING) at The Moxie, her favorite movie theater in the WORLD. When they arrived, Michelle was under the impression that Jeff was simply giving her a really cool Christmas present, but what she didn't know was that Jeff had a big ol' diamond ring hidden in his pocket. We gave Jeff and Michelle some complimentary concession goods and ...

State of The Moxie #1 - September 2005

EXCERPT:  I'm sure many of you were waiting for a post like this one. Lying in bed night after night, you'd stare at your ceiling and wonder, "when will Dan write a post - I mean a real post - about the inner workings of The Moxie? You know, like how many people attended, how well each movie did, and junk like that. When, ceiling, when?" Perhaps your ceiling answered you back. Perhaps not. Either way, your pseudo-prayers have been answered. I give you: State of The Moxie #1 - September 2005 Before I jump into the details, let ...

Showing in select cities... including Springfield

EXCERPT:  We just found out from Paul, our awesome film booker, that Warner Independent has invited us to be a debut theater for Albert Brooks' new documentary comedy, LOOKING FOR COMEDY IN THE MUSLIM WORLD. Now when you hear "showing in select cities" you won't have to drive all the way up to Chicago to find a "select city"... at least for this film. The movie is scheduled for a limited release on February 10th, but we'll be showing it well before that. Woo hoo! Maybe if we do good with LOOKING FOR COMEDY, they'll keep us as a debut theater ...

Let there be light!

EXCERPT:  It's been a bad, bad day. You know the kind... where nothing seems to go your way. First thing this morning I found out that my iPod (my fourth if you've been keeping track) decided to finally bite the dust. Typically whenever my iPod breaks I just call Apple support and have them send me a new one, but I voided my warranty by switching the crappy Apple battery with one that would actually hold a charge for longer than 3 hours. Long story short, I successfully switched the battery and had everything working correctly, until suddenly, this morning, my ...

Freakish Moxie Balloons

EXCERPT:  One month ago today, November 3rd, 2005, the MFAS (Missouri Film Alliance of Springfield) celebrated their organization's first birthday at The Moxie. They brought hor'deurves, pretty table clothes, and a bouquet of balloons filled with so called "extra helium." Apparently this "extra helium" was supposed to make the balloons stay afloat longer... and boy does it! One month since the MFAS gala, the balloons are still floating in the air above The Moxie deposit safe. I don't even think they've shrunk! To test this so called "extra helium," I sacrificed one of the balloons and inhaled its contents into ...
