Dan & Nic's trip to the World Series

EXCERPT:  I know I promised a full World Series update on Friday, but it's been a busy weekend. Either way, excuse or not, here's the 99% true account of our trip to the World Series, told mostly in pictures: Nicole couldn't find a Cardinals' sweatshirt that suited her, so she bought a red hooded zip-up and used sparkly puff paint to make the logo. Isn't she creative?! I wanted her to write something on the back like "I hate Kenny Rogers... both of them!" or "Kenny Rogers is a bastard," but she refused. When we ...

November calendar

EXCERPT:  Well, we just finished our November calendar, and let me tell you... it's going to be a controversially profane month. Just in time for the holidays, right?! We'll also be making a big upgrade to the auditorium in the very near future, but more on that later. Let's see what's coming up: DEATH OF A PRESIDENT - (Nov. 1 - 7) - Three of the largest theater chains in the nation (Regal, Cinemark, AMC) are refusing to show D.o.a.P., which easily makes it one of the most, if not THE MOST controversial films of 2006. QUINCEANERA - (Nov. ...

Feast, famine, or somewhere in between

EXCERPT:  The theater business, perhaps unlike any other industry in the whole of the universe, is especially prone to the "feast or famine" business cycle. For those of you who don't know what that means, here's a brief tagline: you're either making money, or you're not. All businesses have high and low points, of course, but they tend to be accentuated by sloping trends. They're either building up for the holiday season, or winding down in preparation for Summer. In other words, they can sense coming trends... for the most part. We're lucky if we're able to guess whether next ...

The new Moxie intro

EXCERPT:  Now that we're showing our trailers on the digital projector before the movie, I can finally start using The Moxie's theme song to make crazy little intros. The first one will run in front of THE SCIENCE OF SLEEP, which opens tonight... and guess what?! HERE IT IS RIGHT HERE FOR ALL TO SEE!!!!!!1 It looks a lot better on the big screen - you can actually read the scrolling text without getting a headache. The big question is this: how long will it be before George Lucas sues us into the ground? Either way, enjoy it ...

Jeff Smith at The Moxie, tomorrow night

EXCERPT:  We just found out tonight (Monday) that Jeff Smith, the subject of CAN MR. SMITH GET TO WASHINGTON ANYMORE? will be here for tomorrow (Tuesday) night's showing. If you want to come see this movie, which I highly recommend, tomorrow night would be an especially good time to do so since you get to meet the actual person the movie is about! How many times have you got to do that... not counting that time Big Smith played after the showing of HOMEMADE HILLBILLY JAM? It's a rare occurence that we're trying to make less so. Do yourself a ...
