The Moxie is hiring

EXCERPT:  Are you 21 or older? Do you love independent film? Can you lift 50 lbs. of film over your head? Do you love The Moxie? Can you give an introduction to a film you've never seen before in front of a group of people who would rather see you dead than have you continue talking? Can you hold an apple in your mouth while wearing tight black leather and a blindfold? If so, you might have what it takes to join our team. Maybe. If you're interested, send us an e-mail at PeeStrain@moxiecinema.com... only replace "PeeStrain" with "info." Why ...

Where's the Moxie sign?

EXCERPT:  The old, tattered banner that has been hanging on the front of our building for nearly nine months has finally come down. Not because we have a new sign to replace it, but because the city has demanded we take it down or file for a banner permit. Okay. Whatever. The banner is now hanging proudly in our lobby; a relic of all the hard work we put into the theater. Eventually, a nice big marquee is going to grace the front of our building. It will have our logo on the left side, changeable letters (for the showtimes) in ...

The Aristocrats...

EXCERPT:  THE ARISTOCRATS opens on Wednesday. We've already pre-sold a bunch of tickets. Like most theaters across the nation, we're choosing to run the film as NC-17... as in, no one under the age of 18 will be allowed. I'm going to get beat up by a gang of angry high schoolers, aren't I? This will be the first time we've had to check IDs at the door. I bet that will lead to some good storys stories. Whew boy! ...

One month old

EXCERPT:  For those of you keeping track, The Moxie turned one month old on Friday. A big thank you to everyone who stopped by during our first 31 days of business... even to the guy who pretended to throw popcorn at me during my introduction on Friday. I really appreciated that, by the way. So here's what's coming up in November: NEW MOVIES - We have TEN (possibly ELEVEN) new movies for November. Compare that to the TWO we showed in September, or the SEVEN we showed in October, and you'll see that we're actually showing MORE MOVIES THAN ...

Groin-Grabbingly Transcendent

EXCERPT:  Nicole and I are starving, but we can't decide what to eat for dinner. I'm in the mood for a roast-beefy-warmish-to-hotish-type dish (with or without bread), and Nicole just wants anything that's edible. Hell, she'll even go for SEMI-edible at this point. Ok, we just ordered Jimmy John's... not because I'm a big fan of Jimmy John's, but it's close (although we're still having them deliver) and they have roast beef sandwiches, which I can heat up in our quarter-power microwave. I've yet to freak from their fastness... although I'm about to frunk* from my fasting. FR•UNK v. (phrunk) ...

Two week runs

EXCERPT:  Yeah, yeah, yeah. I say I don't have enough time to devote to the blog, and yet here I am writing TWO posts in TWO days. Why? Because it's a REALLY slow weekend, that's why. Friday and Saturday set all-time lows for weekend attendance, but since this is only our fourth weekend being open, that doesn't say much. Either way, we learned a valuable lesson: if you own a single screen theater, don't play a movie exclusively for two weeks. Yes, BROKEN FLOWERS has been strong, but not strong enough to warrant the time we allotted for it. Thank goodness ...

Strange things are amiss at the Circle K

EXCERPT:  Last night, right after we closed (about 1:45 am), Nicole heard a bunch of sirens, so she poked her head out the front door to see what was hopping. There, only half a block away from The Moxie, was not one, not two, not five, not ten, not fifteen, but TWENTY OR MORE cop cars with their cherries and blueberries in full effect. I jogged down the street to see what was going on, but no one seemed to have a clue. "I don't know what happened?" "I think someone got shot!" "I ate too much." "The whistles go ...

Return to form

EXCERPT:  *NOTE* - This post was supposed to be published last night, but I didn't finish it in time, and I'm too lazy to go back through and change it to a Tuesday point of view. You've been warned. Mondays are slow, which means it's time for me to drone on about what happened this weekend. Celebrity encounters - Over the weekend The Moxie played host to two shows for the third annual CINEmerge Film and Video Festival. On Friday, we played Jack Perez's La Cucaracha, starring Eric Roberts, who, as you probably already know, is one of the ...

Out with the bad, in with the good

EXCERPT:  Our beer line-up is changing. I won't say which beer is getting the boot, but I will tell you why... in a slightly truncated (and censored) version of the entire story. In the beginning, The Moxie carried TEN beers from THREE breweries in Missouri. Four from St. Louis, three from Kansas City, and three from Springfield. Although our orders haven't been HUGE, all of the distributors, and their respective sales reps, have gone out of their way to make sure we were happy. They return our calls in a timely fashion, fill our orders on time, and even give us ...

Rock n' Roll Space Patrol... OUT OF CONTROL!

EXCERPT:  Tonight was supposed to be pretty slow. Last Tuesday we sold a total of 24 tickets... so if you average that over three showings, that's roughly 8 tickets per show. I was figuring we might double that tonight for two reasons: 1) our first independent film (Rock n' Roll Space Patrol) would probably bring in a good crowd, and 2) our last showing of Murderball would bring in all the people who wanted to see it, but didn't get a chance over the last week. Fifty, maybe sixty tickets total. That was my prediction. Boy, was I wrong. Our 4:30 ...

The poster wall

EXCERPT:  Since several of you were curious about how the poster collage was made - and since I was too busy to take pictures of the actual process - here's a step-by-step guide on how to build your own Moxie poster collage. Materials 4x8 piece of MDF board (makes 32 squares) - you can buy it at Lowe's or Home Depot for about $15 per sheet. 3M 77 spray adhesive - $8 dollars at Wal-Mart or $15 at any craft store. Exacto knife or other sharp cutting blade - you can usually find these at craft stores or ...
