A couple pictures to bide the time

EXCERPT:  I haven't posted any phlogs for awhile (mainly because I haven't had a chance to take any pictures), so here are a couple pix to hold you over. We will not have completely "arrived" until the day I get to cut this tattered rag of a banner off the front of the building. What do you think I should do with it? Burn it for a sense of cathartic release? Hang it in the office? Sell it on eBay? I just don't know! The film poster wall ended up better than I ever could ...

Customers say the darndest things, episode 1

EXCERPT:  Before I begin this series, let me begin by prefacing it with this: The Moxie is a business run by a guy (and his wife) who happens to write a blog that is read by millions and millions of people looking for a good laugh. Be warned, if you visit our theater and say or do something that most people would deem "stupid," you may get written about on the blog. The majority of our customers don't have to worry about being written about, but for those of you who do... fear not. Your identity will be masked behind ...

Expectations: shattered!

EXCERPT:  Things I expected, but now find to be untrue: That the women's restroom would be cleaner than the men's. Surprisingly, this has yet to prove true. That Monday nights would see more than 15 people show up... total. My hypothesis is that only 10% of our potential market (if that) even know we're open yet. We get lots of people coming in "just to look around." The first thing they say is, "I didn't know you were open!" We've only just scratched the surface of our market saturation. We passed out a total of 100 flyers on Missouri ...

Super slow Sunday

EXCERPT:  Man, today has been slow. I imagine most Sundays will probably be like this. We had 21 people for the 3:00 pm show, but the 5:00 and 7:00 only had 15... COMBINED! I doubt the 9:00 show will fare much better, but we shall see. For those of you who were wondering, we've sold 152 bags of popcorn since our opening night. Not too shabby. I plan on keeping a running tally of how many bags we've sold from now until eternity. That way we can add a little line on the bottom of our sign that says, "over ...

I think...

EXCERPT:  ... we're going to get swamped tonight. Wednesday was super busy, Thursday was pretty slow, but today is already shaping up to rival Wednesday. Hip hip hooray! We have to pay a $1,150 deposit to City Utilities just to get an account set up! Hip hip hoorboo! The News-Leader misprinted our schedule for today. Oh well. Lots of people are still showing up. THANK YOU SPRINGFIELD! WE CAN FINALLY AFFORD TO BUY NEW SHOES! ...

It's gettin' hot in here...

EXCERPT:  ... so take off all your clothes... and let me know how hot it is where you're at! I like hearing about the weather in different parts of the world. Right now, in Springfield, it's 90 degrees with 40% humidity, which makes it feel like 93 degrees. That's too hot. What's it like where you're at? Tell me. Tell me! By the way, our first show was pretty slow (only 8 people). One guy came in late and said our concessions were overpriced. "Try to get a soda and popcorn for less than $5.00 at any other theater," I ...

Opening Day... LIVE!

EXCERPT:  Ok, here we go. A minute by minute account of our opening day! 8:37 am - Just walked into the theater (note to self: don't leave theater lying around). We were on the Woody and Suzanne show this morning. It was really fun, except when Woody asked what movie makes me cry. "SELENA!" I didn't even wait for Woody to finish his question. Everyone looked at me a little funny, so I hung my head in shame. Time to clean the theater! 9:37 am - Still cleaning. Nicole just went to fax something at Kinko's. How exciting! ...

Look boss! De press! De press!

EXCERPT:  If you're in the Springfield metro tomorrow, tune your radio dial to 105.9 for the Woody and Suzanne morning show at 8:00 AM. I won't tell you who the guests will be, but I'll give you a hint: their names rhyme with "Spam and lick hole." Then, when you're done listening to that, read this lengthy article about us that ran into today's News-leader... and this one too... and check out this gallery (yes, that's Melanie Griffith on the screen)! And when you're finished with that, zoom over to the Drury Mirror and check this story out. As for ...

This will be on the test

EXCERPT:  Well, the test screenings went a lot better than I had predicted. I was expecting pieces of the roof to fall off during one of the showings, or for the projector to explode right in the middle of the movie or something similarly tragic! But everything went pretty smoothly. The worse thing to happen was having the HVAC go all screwy during the Thursday night shows. Dear Thursday night audiences: I'm sorry the auditorium was colder than a well digger's ass in China. It won't happen again. I promise. I called the HVAC guys on Friday and everything was fixed ...

Test screeings are a go

EXCERPT:  Last night's test screening went pretty well, so here's hoping we can pull another miracle out our ass tonight! Just kidding. The miracle will actually come out of our nose(s). For those of you who came last night: thanks! And for those coming tonight: early thanks! I'll post pictures sometime over the weekend (most likely Sunday), but until then please feel free to unburden yourself on this timely topic from the Moxie forum. Wish us luck! ...

Tonight's the big night...

EXCERPT:  I wonder how many things can, and will, go wrong? We're going to have two sold out shows back to back tonight, so we'll find out pretty quick how well traffic moves through the building. As for our inventory... HA! We're having a bit of an inventory quandary: as in, which beers and pops do we keep cold first, and in what amounts? We have to predict which drinks will be the most popular and stock accordingly. The only problem is, we don't have a lot of space to store cold drinks! AH! We're going to die of a heart ...

I shan't keep you waiting...

EXCERPT:  Today has been a long day. I was meaning to sit down and answer the Q&A, but I haven't found the time yet. My grandmother unexpectedly died this afternoon. All work has pretty much stopped since then. Nicole and I have done a few things, but it's hard to do much when your mind is elsewhere. I won't delve into unnecessary detail here, but I did want to leave a quick post to FINALLY announce our opening film(s). I'm sorry I didn't announce them earlier, but we wanted to make darn sure we had them in the bag. The ...

Get your invitation to blog readers' night

EXCERPT:  The online sign-up form is ready! To be fair, invitations will be given on a first come, first serve basis. Now go sign up! ...

Post #297 - September 11, 2005 - 11:09 pm

I'm sorry, dear blog readers

EXCERPT:  I've been noticably absent from the comment and forum interaction for quite some time. As I noted in the past, there's a definite correlation between how busy I am at the theater and how involved I get with the blog. There was once I time when the blog and I were quite... "intimate," shall we say. Whenever a new comment was posted, I was quick to respond with a comment of my own. I used to compliment the blog. Take it out for dinner. We were tight. Now I won't even return the blog's phone calls. When I see the ...

Stress in, stress out

EXCERPT:  This week has been CRAZY! We've gotten so much done, yet we have so much left to do. The biggest accomplishment was getting the projector up and running. Everything is running 100%, and we're completely ready for our test screenings (starting next week). I know everyone is anxious to hear what our schedule will be, but all I can tell you is this... Our test film will be Amelie! I know the majority of you have already seen it, but we still thought it would be a great film to show for our test screenings. Mainly because 1) it's ...

Our projector is up and running

EXCERPT:  For testing purposes, our projector installer, Lanny, gave me an old film that was gathering dust in his garage. "You can keep it," he told me. And so, ladies and jelly spoons, I give you the film that christened the Moxie's porthole: Shining Through, starring the indomitable team of Michael Douglas and Melanie Griffith... and Liam Neeson. Unfortunately, Liam's not on any of the reels we have, so I'm not sure if he's really in the movie. ...

The long weekend

EXCERPT:  Here's a quick recap of this weekend's events: Friday - First Friday - We had an enormous crowd at the theater. If I were to take a guess, which I'm going to do right now, I'd say we had at least 600 people swing by to say hello. The best part of the evening was seeing people sit in the auditorium and say "Wow, these seats are really comfy!" The worst part of the evening was when one gentleman sat down and the seat broke and he fell to his death on the cold hard terrazzo. Just kidding! The ...

I should've mentioned this earlier...

EXCERPT:  We'll be on the 10:00 news tonight on channel 33 (Springfield's ABC affiliate). If you read this within the next 8 minutes, turn on the tube and check us oooouuuuutttttt! Otherwise, make sure you drop by the theater tomorrow night for our "open house," which is in no way associated with the First Friday Artwalk. We'll be showcasing paintings from our inaugural artists, Olof and Jennifer Pierson. Their stuff is very, very cool, so make sure you swing by and take a look... and check out the nearly-finished theater! As always, popcorn will be on the house! Be ...
