Moxie Cinema

The cat's out of the bag...

EXCERPT:  October's Moxie A Go-Go was just announced in today's paper (see here). We're co-presenting THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW with the Landers Theatre... at their place, of course. It's going to be a blast! The Landers is selling ROCKY HORROR prop kits with rice and newspaper and all the other stuff that people toss around during a typical screening. I've never even seen RHPS, but I can easily say it's been the single most requested movie for us to play. I'm just glad I'm not on the cleaning staff... woo hoo! ...

Is the grass greener

EXCERPT:  Our big one year anniversary is right around the corner, which means it's time to wax introspective and ask myself, "has it all been worth it?" By the time September 21st rolls around, I will have worked 360 out of 365 days, introduced nearly 900 of the 1,000 movies we've shown, manually rewound over 1,800 reels, and spent close to 4,000 hours inside The Moxie (3,800 of which were probably on the computer). It's been a long, tough first year, but I'd be lying if I didn't say I've loved every minute of it. Even still, there's some things I ...

I'm not dead

EXCERPT:  ... just tired, and busy. More later. Don't forget, local filmmakers, you have less than 2 weeks to submit your short films for Moxie Shorts 2006. If you don't turn one in, I will hunt you down and make you wish that you had. I have my ways. ...

An Old Box of Films, Part 2

EXCERPT:  So, here's what we've learned so far: THE DREAMER is none other than Dreamer, a Rocky-style bowling movie, as Jeff pointed out on the first post. Strangely enough, DREAMER was never released theatrically... it went straight to video. So then why do we have a pristine 35mm print of the film? And more importantly, would a bowling movie from 1979 play well at The Moxie? The STAR WARS trailer is actually a promo for the April 10, 1981 re-release (just before THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK was released). I was hoping it was an original from 76 or 77, ...

An Unbelievable Truth

EXCERPT:  We broke all kinds of records today, and I'm dying to tell the world. First off, we completely sold out the 7:00 showing of AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, grossing (with only one show on a Wednesday night) nearly HALF of what the other theater did over their entire opening weekend. I don't want to gloat, but that's really AWESOME! Hopefully the distributor(s) will think twice when we tell them that our audience is much more atuned to these types of films than those at the multiplexes. Second point of incredibleness: we have a HUGE turnout for STRANGERS WITH CANDY, which, ...

An Old Box of Films, Part 1

EXCERPT:  Back when we first opened the theater, a gentleman dropped by and told us that he had recently inherited several boxes and canisters filled with old 35mm films. He had no idea what the movies were, so he asked if we might be able to put them on our projector and help him figure it out. We agreed, and told him to bring by the films whenever he had a chance. Today, nearly a year after our original meeting, he called to let us know he was in town with the films. Long story short, we now have a ...

Mmm, mmm Quizno's

EXCERPT:  Yesterday, only a few blocks from the theater, a brand new Quizno's (one of my all-time favorite sandwich shops) opened its doors to the public, kicking off the beginning phase of a much bemoaned, yet highly anticipated, gentrification of downtown Springfield. I, for one, think it's great, and made it a point to buy a sandwich on opening day - not really so much because I support big chain diversification, but mainly because their sandwiches make my pants tight. I can't say I'll show the same enthusiasm for every nationwide store that opens its doors downtown, but for ...
