The Moxie presents PASSPORT SERIES

EXCERPT:  The July calendar is up! Pretty sweet, eh? Not only are we celebrating POINT BREAK's 15th anniversary in July, but we're also kicking off the month with THE MOXIE PASSPORT SERIES. Here's how it works: During the first week of July, pick up your official Moxie Passport at the Cinebar (see the mock-up below). We have SEVEN international films in July, and when you come watch one we'll put a stamp on the corresponding number in your passport. At the end of the month, the people with the most stamps will have their passports put into a container ...

A depressing Monday post

EXCERPT:  In case you thought we were the only theater in the US to have AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH ripped away from us, think again. Arthouse theaters seem to be an endangered species these days, and no other article has more accurately described our current state of peril than this one. If you've ever considered opening an arthouse theater, or care about the existance of little microcinemas like The Moxie... READ THIS ARTICLE. Now, along comes Al Gore and his hip PowerPoint presentation. Do the little indie arthouse guys reap the benefits of playing this Paramount Classics "blockbuster"? The answer has ...

Moxie Shorts 2006

EXCERPT:  For those of you who didn't notice the new ad on the sidebar, or the new section in the forum, Moxie Shorts 2006 has been officially announced. Everything you need to know can be found at www.MoxieShorts.com, so what are you waiting for?! Get busy making a movie, dude! But before you go... I have a few suggestions for people who might be considering making a short film, but don't quite know what to make it about. Instead of taking the easy road and making a short film about the rise and fall of Greco-inspired architecture in pre-war Miami, ...

A Day at the Moxie without Dan and Nicole

EXCERPT:  Wow... two posts in a row by me (Justin, not Dan)! I'm sitting in the vault waiting for THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON'S first showing to end. Dan and Nicole both have tonight off! This is the first time they've shared a night off since the theater opened in September. Kelley and I are running the ship, which means that everyone who comes in tonight looks at us, realizes we're not Dan and Nicole, and walks out the door thinking they've gone to the wrong theater. So what's the special occasion? Today is Dan and Nicole's 3rd wedding ...

Answered prayers...and classified ads

EXCERPT:  Hello there. This is just a quick note saying that (short of a hole in the sky opening up and sucking every major league baseball player into the heavens) the coolest Springfield-related thing since the opening of the Moxie has risen: SPRINGFIELD CRAIGSLIST! Now head out there and post some ads! ...

Mobile cinemas on the rise

EXCERPT:  Moxie A Go-Go isn't the only mobile cinema on the scene (although some might argue that it's the best). The UK has quite a few, including this little one that operates out of a VW van. If I were to guess, I'd say the best known cinema on wheels belongs to the Alamo Drafthouse. They actually have TWO 35mm projectors running out of the back of a modified moving van. For the more DIY spirits among you, there's been a recent upswing in guerilla theaters sprouting up around the US. The Santa Cruz version is currently the best known, ...

The biggest outdoor screen in a 30 mile radius

EXCERPT:  We made a trip over to the Old Firehouse on Commercial Street last night to test out the projector. I was afraid the image wouldn't look bright enough from our planned set-up point, but boy was I wrong. The image looks incredible! It's huge!!! I think this will be one of the best Moxie A Go-Go's to date. There's going to be beer and popcorn (just like at the theater), and all the concession proceeds will go to the Commercial Club, which is the organization responsible for the continuing renovation of the Commercial Street district. Here's a super sweet mock-up ...

How to ensure low attendance to a really good movie in the bible belt

EXCERPT:  Print the synopsis for KINKY BOOTS in the movie section as: "Based on a true story of an English footwear factory that made kinky boots for transvestites to save the business." Hmmm. I wonder if the local paper will let us write the synopsis from here on in? In other news: check out this cool Moxie commercial that Nathan Springer made for a class project. Thanks Nathan! It looks grrrreeeeeaaaaaattttttt! That's it, kiddos! Come see KINKY BOOTS!!!!!!!! ...

An inconvenient truth about that movie with the same name

EXCERPT:  Well, it's happened again. A movie starts out on a limited release schedule, receives insane amounts of press, opens in four theaters to box-office-busting amounts of money, and just like that... the movie is verboten to smaller theaters. Such was the case with BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN and THANK YOU FOR SMOKING, and now once more for AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH and A SCANNER DARKLY. When Paramount booked the film with us nearly a month ago (we were even listed on their PDF of theaters showing the film), TRUTH was still fairly unknown, but once the buzz and hype and stellar reviews ...

Rock and Roll!!!!!!!11

EXCERPT:  Another great night for ROCK AND ROLL SPACE PATROL. It wasn't a sellout, but it was pretty close. For those of you who didn't get a chance to see it, you still have one more chance tomorrow night. The DVDs went on sale today at Troma and on Amazon, but if you come to the showing tomorrow night, you can get an AUTOGRAPHED copy! DVDtalk has a nice little review about RNRSP: When you think about it, it's amazing how inspiration can overwhelm presentation. For all its digital bells and whistles, the Star Wars prequels are a horrendous waste ...

I'm not the only one who thinks...

EXCERPT:  BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE is one of greatest movies of all time. Jason Kottke, world reknowned blogger, also happens to agree with me. I know I'm going to get mail about my five-star rating for this movie, but it cannot be helped. One summer when I was a kid, a friend and I watched Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure -- no joke -- every single day for a span of 2 months. I still know every line by heart, the timing, inflection, everything. If there were a Broadway production of this movie, I could slide effortlessly into the ...

Ebert hypes AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH

EXCERPT:  I know most of you don't put much stock into what Roger Ebert says, but he's still one of my favorites, and probably the single most digested film critic of all-time, so you can imagine my surprise, and delight, when reading his new review on AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH (opening at The Moxie on July 5th). Here's a quick quote: When I said I was going to a press screening of "An Inconvenient Truth," a friend said, "Al Gore talking about the environment! Bor...ing!" This is not a boring film. The director, Davis Guggenheim, uses words, images and Gore's concise ...
