HARD CANDY looks...

EXCERPT:  ... "in tents." We have a big crowd for the inaugural showing, so we'll see what the general consensus is when it ends. It's hot in Springfield. Causes mind to slow. Conserve energy. Dr. Pepper. Tired. Peanuts. UPDATE: our first crowd, which was pretty big for a Wednesday, had the following to say: DAN: "How was it?" actual quotes "That was probably the most disturbing movie I've ever seen. I could've gone my whole life without needing to see that." "Intense. Incredibly intense." "Where are your restrooms?" "That. Was. Freaky. Uncomfortable freaky." ...

The Inconvenient Truth about booking limited release films

EXCERPT:  Every 15 minutes I get an e-mail via our suggestion form asking me if we'll be playing Al Gore's AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH before the June 6th vote for a new coal-burning power plant in Springfield. Sometimes people leave their e-mail addresses, other times they don't. So, in the hopes of killing 896 birds with 1 stone, I'm going to reprint the e-mail I've been sending: Dear loyal Moxie supporter, We will be shownig Al Gore's AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH, starting on July 5th. The movie just opened last weekend in four theaters (two in NYC, and two in LA). ...

The Moxie Blog: Two years old and still not listed as an A-list blog on blogebrity.com

EXCERPT:  Well, here we are again. Another year of The Moxie Blog is through and done. When I started this blog 730 days ago, I had no idea it would be dragging on this long. It still seems strange to me that the entire theater, and the rest of The Moxie website, has materialized around the blog. I bet that's pretty rare in the business world. Can you imagine what this blog would be like if we were still in the process of opening? Pathetic. That's what it would be - absolutely pathetic. But here we are, two years in! ...

Just dropping by to say hello

EXCERPT:  Hello. I haven't written much lately, have I? I'm not sure what's been keeping me from posting lately... maybe it's the fact that not much has been going on around here, or that I just haven't been in the mood to write much lately (I go through cycles). Either way, here we are. Hmmm. Do you know that in TWO days this blog will be TWO years old? Can you believe that?! That's twice as old as the theater itself! Did you know that two human years equates to roughly 89 years in the life of a blog. It's ...

The Magician's Alliance hates The Moxie

EXCERPT:  Tonight is our ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT MARATHON at The Belmonte! Woo hoo!!! I just picked up 49 chocolate-dipped bananas covered with various goodies: toasted coconut, chocolate sprinkles, crushed peanuts, and toasted almonds. I'm also taking over a giant cooler filled with tasty Fitz sodas (root beer, cream soda, and orange). The Belmonte will be providing a peanut butter and jelly bar, along with some nice warm tea. Unfortunately, I was unable to procure an illusionist. It's like I've been banned from the Magician's Alliance! I was hoping to get Tony Wonder. We're still going to have a blast - illusionist or ...

Market trends at The Moxie

EXCERPT:  The movie exhibition business is often described as "feast or famine" by those working on the inside. In the early days (read: pre-last week), my mental outlook was based on the highs and lows we experienced here at the theater. If it was a good week, I was happy; if it was a bad week, I was grumpy; and if it was a piss poor month altogether, I was an intolerable, whiny, little pantywaste. Now, as a veteran theater-owner of nigh on eight months, I've finally begun to harden myself against sudden attendance downturns. Two thirds of a year is ...

Da Vinci Code protests

EXCERPT:  This handwritten letter was delivered to a theater owner in Cleveland, Ohio: Dear Superintendant of the theater, Please do not consent to have the "Da Vinci Code," movie presented at your theatre. It's a major attack against Christianity, based on a novel by Dan Brown who says that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had sexual relations and a child together - and that the figure of St. John in the Da Vinci picture of "the Last supper", is really Mary Magdalene. How preposterous when there are 12 figures, representing the 12 apostles. If you do present this ...

Arrested Development fans UNITE!

EXCERPT:  As many of you already know, we're hosting an ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT MARATHON at the Belmonte on Saturday, May 20th. I'd like to show at least 10 episodes, but I need your help deciding which ones. If you jump over to tv.com you can view a listing of all the episodes from all the seasons. Let me know which ones are you favorites, or which ones you'd like to see, and I'll tally up the votes to find out which ones get played. I think the pilot episode is a given... Season 3, by the way, isn't completely out of ...

Hello Springfield!

EXCERPT:  Springfield's very own Federal Prison Hospital - home to such notable criminals as Al Capone, Robert Stroud, and John Gotti - has a shout out in FIND ME GUILTY, Sidney Lumet's new film that just started showing tonight. I was startled by it, but not nearly as much as when I found out Jason Bourne was from Nixa (a suburb of Springfield). Hooray for local references in big Hollywood movies! Good thing I don't live in NYC, or else this post would be much, much longer. ...

Stone Reynolds strikes again

EXCERPT:  As many of you already know, The Moxie sponsored a team of employees and friends to compete in the SATO 48 Hour Film Challenge a couple weekends ago. We had a blast making this little 5 minute film, and were nominated for SIX awards (Best Picture, Best Editing, Best Direction, Best Screenplay, Best Sound, and Best Actor for DUG)... unfortunately, we won NOTHING! As is the case with all good awards ceremonies, another movie swept the event. Now that the awards gala has past (it was Sunday night), we're free to show our film to the public. So in ...

A perfect storm

EXCERPT:  I have a feeling that tonight is going... to... be... incredibly... ssssslllllooooowwwwww. Why? Well, do you remember how I said it's pretty slow on nights when there's a pub crawl? And do you remember when I wrote that First Friday Artwalks tend to cannibalize our older demographic? And do you recall how I told you that our attendance decreases across the board on nights (especially weekend nights) when there's a Springfield Cardinal's home game? And how beautiful weather tends to put a dent in ticket sales? Well, guess what's going on tonight... on this beautiful, 68 degree evening there is ...

A long one about digital cinema

EXCERPT:  We get lots of comments here at The Moxie, ranging from "this popcorn is great!" to "the restrooms are completely out of toilet paper... again!", and my personal favorite: "something over here smells like a rotting corpse!" Most of these comments are met with a nod and a smile, but there's ONE particular comment that really gripes our souls - so much so that whenever Nicole hears it she instantly tosses her customer service face aside and matches the remark with a fiery retort and a sound slap. What could this vile remark be, you ask? Two words: real ...

Just in the nick of time: a new MoxieTV Episode

EXCERPT:  Here's a new episode of MoxieTV for you to lambast. It's the shortest one to date, but there's only so much you can do with a bunch of rubber snakes. And now for something completely different: an animated gif of Chuck Norris popping some blonde in the nose. It's only funny because it's Chuck. *sigh* If only we could get him to do a MoxieTV episode with us... if only. ...

Hollywood sees the light; admits, "maybe we should start making better movies"

EXCERPT:  I'm sure this article isn't indicative of how everyone feels in Hollywood, but it's one of the first optimistic pieces I've read about the decline in theater attendence. The article is written by Lynda Obst, who produced such money-making films as FLASHDANCE, ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING, SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE, and most recently, HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN 10 DAYS. I thought you guys might enjoy reading it, and have a comment or two about the conclusion. We Lost It at the Movies ...
