The Moxie vs. Beautiful Weather

EXCERPT:  According to Paul, our booking agent and co-founder of the illustrious Ragtag Cinemacafe, there are two months over the calendar year that almost always do poorly: December and April. I remember one of Paul's first pieces of advice was to "save up everything you make from January to March, because you'll need it in April." His reasoning was simple: beautiful weather. And it makes perfect sense. Over the winter months, everyone's yard, garden, and landscaping slowly turns to crap, and it's not until the first sign of nice weather (typically in late March and April) that people start to ...

And in other news...

EXCERPT:  The April calendar is online, as is MoxieTV episode 3. Enjoy! I'm still pounding out the print version of the calendar, and hope to send it off to the printer later today. It's going to be another great month! ...

Moxie A Go-Go Was a No-Show...

EXCERPT:  NOT! Our first Moxie A Go-Go event was a tremendous success! We had over 50 people show up, which was more than myself or Mille's had anticipated. Prior to the event, my stomach was in knots worrying about several factors: 1) our screen would be too small, 2) there wouldn't be enough food to justify the $20 per ticket price, and 3) something would break during the showing. All of those fears proved to be unfounded, as the screen fit the space perfectly, each guest was served a heaping plate of food, and all the technical stuff performed without a ...

The Moxie Loves...

EXCERPT:  Hope Davis! I was sitting here tonight realizing that out of the 50 or so movies we've shown so far, Hope Davis has been in three: PROOF, DUMA, and now THE MATADOR. That's 6%! The closest contender behind our new friend Hope is Sarah Silverman for THE ARISTOCRATS and SARAH SILVERMAN: JESUS IS MAGIC. Or am I forgetting someone? But with Sarah, that's only 4% - a huge difference! Of Hope's films, PROOF did surprisingly well, while DUMA had one of the lowest turnouts, but we're expecting some nice crowds in for THE MATADOR. Based on how ...

Fast on the heels of MoxieTV...

EXCERPT:  ... comes MoxieFM! Now instead of listening to the same CD over and over for weeks on end, we're going to mix things up with various songs from ALL of our local artists. Of course, it wouldn't be MoxieFM if it were just a random smattering of songs, so we'll be interjecting little segments here and there to give the pre-show music a life of its own. Now that we have Moxie Cinema, The Moxie Blog, Moxie A Go-Go, MoxieTV, and MoxieFM, I think it's safe to say that THE MOXIE has become "the king of all media!" Next on ...

More MoxieTV goodness

EXCERPT:  UPDATED I'm not going to lie to you, I haven't even started on my 5 piece article regarding the rise and fall of the cinema industry. There's several reasons for this: 1) we're right in the middle of moving, 2) we've been fairly busy at the theater, 3) Justin is running me ragged with MoxieTV shoots, and 4) I can't think of a good title for the articles. Don't you worry your sweet little head though - I'll write them... eventually. As for MoxieTV, episode 2 will be available either late tonight or early tomorrow. We just wrapped ...

Annie Proulx's serpent tongue

EXCERPT:  I'm still working on the "yet-to-be-titled" articles about the death of cinema, but in the meantime I thought some of you might find Annie Proulx's vitriolic description of the Oscar ceremonies an interesting read. For those of you who don't know, Annie Proulx is the author responsible for the SUPER short story that BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN was adapted from. She also wrote THE SHIPPING NEWS, of which I read 78 pages and promptly fell asleep. I just can't get into fiction. And speaking of serpent tongues, check out this story about a young German girl who has the world's largest ...

MoxieTV Episode #1

EXCERPT:  Ok, so here it is - MoxieTV Episode One. I think it looks pretty good, but Justin wanted me to note a few things: The special microphone we used to film this episode is capable of picking up the sound of cells dividing inside a pregnant woman from over four miles away, so please excuse the awesome sounds that my clothes and hand rubbing makes. We shot this episode from the hip, without the aid of a script (thus my many "uh's" and "so's"), so it's not the most polished piece of professional pronounciation in the world. The ...

Two new features to the blog

EXCERPT:  Being the foremost blog about running a single screen movie theater in Springfield, Missouri isn't as easy as it seems. There's a lot of competition out there trying, desparately at times, to chip away at our near-monopolized share of the market. In order to keep those forces at bay, we have to push ourselves to be as innovative as possible; continually staying one step ahead of those who would love nothing more than to see us fail. Keeping with that mission, we're going to be unveiling two radically different features to the blog in the next few days. The ...

From zero to busy in 12.8 seconds

EXCERPT:  I just wanted to drop a note letting everyone know that my brain is a pile of mush right now. I've been trying to write something meaningful for the last four days, but we've been so busy with TRANSAMERICA crowds, MOXIE A GO-GO preparation, moving out of our house, and finding underwear in the lobby that I've hardly had time to sit in front of my computer for longer than an hour at a time... which is saying a lot for me. Nicole has the ability to write posts too, but she's afraid that no one will think she's ...

The Dark Art of Booking a Single Screen Cinema

EXCERPT:  This post has been waiting in the wings for far too long. I've seriously been trying to write it for well over four months, but every time I start to type, something more pressing comes along... like an iron, set to full steam! That, my friends, is comedy gold. So, as the title suggests, today's topic will be "The Dark Art of Booking a Single Screen Cinema," but before I go on at length about the fineries of film "felection" (I had to maintain alliteration... at all costs!), let me spit out a few side notes: 1. The Oscars ...

Intermission Impossible

EXCERPT:  I can't claim that joke as my own... one of our customers, Shad, made it up. Anyway, here's Justin's latest installment in the "Life at the Moxie" short short short film series. If you notice yourself in the video, please direct your lawsuit to Justin. That's a 12 minute intermission condensed down to 1 minute and 30 seconds. Pay particular attention to the piece of hair jutting out of Nicole's head. She'd really appreciate that. ...

Pity parades are for losers

EXCERPT:  First off, let me apologize for last night's pity post. I was really bummed out over our super shitty February, and was hoping (quite naively) that our luck would change along with the new month. When it didn't, I hit a HUGE low. I won't delve into the gritty details, but Nicole and I ended up having a long conversation where I ended up sounding like the world's biggest defeatist, which is something that has never happened before in relation to The Moxie. Needless to say, we both went to bed with stress-induced stomach aches. And that's when I ...

Dan is a panty waste

EXCERPT:  After spending over a month of pleading, negotiating, and flat out pandering for our March line-up (which, if you haven't noticed, is our strongest month of all time), it kind of breaks my heart to see so few people show up. Some might view our calendar as just a "list of movies," but those 7 or 8 films are debated over, fought for, and weighed against so many others... so to us, it feels like the fate of The Moxie hangs in the balance at the onset of each new month. Our viablity is tied to the films we choose. ...
