Moxie Cinema

Moxie A Go-Go

EXCERPT:  It's not listed on the online calendar yet, but there's a new event series debuting in March... MOXIE A GO-GO. Basically, it's a portable version of The Moxie that can go anywhere at anytime. Think of it like a hot Moxie injection! Mmmm. Lion's Choice roast beef. Here's how I explained it on our calendar: "Keeping with our mission of offering unique cinematic experiences to the Springfield community, The Moxie is proud to announce our latest film series, MOXIE A GO-GO. Think of it as a portable Moxie experience that can be shown anywhere. Our inaugural event will be ...

True / False = False

EXCERPT:  My 13 film marathon was a bust. I went up to Columbia on Friday afternoon, watched SICK: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF BOB FLANAGAN and THE HEART OF THE GAME (FUCK was sold out). After watching THE HEART OF THE GAME, I went to a filmmaker / passholder party and stood in the corner drinking beer... then Nicole called from the theater. There had been an accident - two accidents, in fact - that resulted in a reel falling off the projector during a movie. Thankfully the reel wasn't able to fall all the way to the ground due ...

True / False Film Festival 2006

EXCERPT:  I'm going to be attending the True / False Film Festival in Columbia, MO over the weekend... alone. How pathetic is that? I'm going to sit through 13 movies over three days with just me and my sock puppet, Marvin Blando. I was thinking about doing a day-by-day account of the films I see, but who am I kidding... no one reads the blog on the weekend. I think I'll just collect notes and then write a T/F summary on Monday or Tuesday. If you're interested, this is the itinerary I'm going to try to stick to: FRIDAY: ...

Check Your Pulse

EXCERPT:  (please note: This is Nicole! The blog now has bylines, so you might be seeing more stories from me!) So, uh, PULSE… Raise your hand if you saw it. Now keep your hand raised if you understood it? Or understood why the critics loved it so much? “More frightened than I’ve ever been in a movie theater,” says someone from Time Out New York. We deduced he must have had a gun pointed to his head while watching the film. Because although it had its creepy moments, it certainly wasn’t frightening. Maddening, maybe. Confusing. Pretentious. A little ...

State of The Moxie #4 - December 2005

EXCERPT:  Well, I guess I've made you guys wait long enough... it's finally time to delve into our December numbers. I know it was barely two months ago, but December seems like a far gone memory in the mind of The Moxie, especially since February is trying hard to steal away the title of "Worst Month Ever." Unlike February, however, December had all kinds of excuses for being a terrible month: students were studying for finals then heading out of town, people were broke from holiday shopping, everyone was rushing around. We did, however, sell a TON of gift certificates. In ...

The big wheels keep on turning

EXCERPT:  Justin just bought a new video camera, so he's taken to filming everything he sees... including stuff at work. Here's a good one of me rewinding part two of DUMA. He also wants me to add that this was just a test run, and he only had three shots to work from... but in reality, Justin worked on that 10 second clip for 18 hours and culled it down from 30 minutes of source footage. If you can't get the embedded player to work, you can also see the film on YouTube. Depending on the reaction he ...

500 shows strong

EXCERPT:  Today's 4:30 showing of PULSE was our 500th official show, and, like an idiot, I completely forgot to mention it during the introdution. Now none of those people will realize that they were a part of Moxie history, and that their names will be taught in history classes years from now. On a side note, I was asked the classic "if a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around, does it make a sound?" question earlier today. My answer: "Yes, it makes a sound, but it can only be heard by either Chuck Norris or Werner ...

Soft n' Silky... oh yeah!

EXCERPT:  During tonight's showing of PULSE, we ran out of soap (Soft & Silky) in the red bathroom. A replacement box was retrieved from the vault, and the ensuing giggles have yet to let up. I don't know which picture is dirtier? What do you think? Can anyone come up with some creative captions for steps #1 through #5? ...

March Madness

EXCERPT:  Fact: weekday matinees are deadly slow - usually bringing in less than 10 people. In the beginning we thought a 4:30 show would attract the older, retired crowd and a few wayward college students with lopsided class schedules. Our first quarter statistics told a very different story. As it turns out, most people are working during our matinee shows, and those that aren't working are doing something that doesn't include coming to our theater. Let's look at the hard numbers: + Weekday Matinees, excluding Friday, average about 10 people per show... and that's being generous. Tickets are matinee price ...

Valentine's Day and female circumcision

EXCERPT:  People stayed away from GRIZZLY MAN because they thought it would show Timothy Treadwell being devoured by bears. Now it seems as though people are staying away from MOOLAADE because they think they're actually going to be confronted with female circumcision, which, of course, isn't the case. It's a shame that more people won't come see this movie. Ousmane Sembene movies are few and far between in this part of the country. And for those of you who are wondering why we'd even consider playing a movie like this on Valentine's Day... well, to be totally honest with you, ...

Welcome to Moxie 2.0

EXCERPT:  Here it is: the new Moxie Online Experience, version TWO POINT OH! Feel free to have a look around... you'll be surprised by how many dead links you won't find. There are still a few pages that have yet to roll out, but I'm not going to show them on the menu until they're 100% ready. Also, the new mod_rewrite structure might cause a few of the old blog links to not work, but I'll fix that shortly. Sorry it took me so long to unveil the new design. Hopefully it was worth the wait. Send me your bugs, ...

Rats and popcorn

EXCERPT:  We had our first surprise health inspection a couple days ago... and we PASSED! Zero critical violations, and only 167 minor ones - 166 of which were for me scratching my butt while the health inspector talked to us. It's amazing how well a carefully placed pile of popcorn can hide a rat king. On a side note: the website will be down at some point over the weekend, which means by Monday there's gonna be a new sheriff in town... and it ain't Sawyer. Thanks for your patience, freckles. ...

Help us feed

EXCERPT:  Here's the deal: Nicole and I don't eat right. We spend between 10 to 14 hours a day at the theater, which makes it extremely difficult to fit in well-rounded meals that don't include popcorn as the main ingredient. One of my new year's resolutions was to eat healthier and cut out Taco Bell from my diet, but then that portable thing came back on the menu. You know the one: tostada shell with beans and meat and sour cream and nacho cheese, wrapped up in a grilled soft tortilla. So. Good. We try to eat at least one ...

Don't say I never taught you anything

EXCERPT:  Nicole and I strolled around MSU's campus today, plastering Moxie calendars wherever we could. I even snuck a few into the backpacks of sleeping students. Psh. Slackers. Being on campus reminded me of an old time-saving trick that I'm going to pass on to my high school and college student readership. Ok, let's say you have a paper due. Big paper, small paper, whatever - it doesn't make a difference. Now, on the eve of the paper's due date something will inevitably come up that is more important than finishing said paper (i.e. new episode of "Lost", a cool ...

Albert Pujols is my friend

EXCERPT:  I had a meeting with our Anheuser-Busch distributor this morning to discuss our involvement with AB's new online ordering system for retailers. As it turns out, The Moxie will be the first business in the ENTIRE COUNTRY to test the new system. Not Wal-Mart. Not Costco. Not Google. Moxie Cinema, baby. M-O-X-I-E! In exchange for letting me be the first beta tester, I'm going to provide them with an analysis of my experience (basic stuff). So, as you can plainly see, the entire fate of the Anheuser-Busch empire now rests in the capable hands of The Moxie. If I ...

Wait a minute

EXCERPT:  Looks like the general consensus is that everyone is okay with waiting, which is a good thing since we all know had I made the site live today, I'd never get around to making it work 100%. Please note, though, that version 2.0 isn't going to be a HUGE change, so don't get too excited. Most of the stuff you're already used to (blog, calendar, forum) will stay virtually unchanged. The big difference will be the little pages I never got around to finishing in version 1.0 of the Moxie Online Experience, or MOE. However, since you were all ...

Question of the day

EXCERPT:  Ok, the new website is 80% finished. Should I (a) go live tomorrow, as promised, with a few holes and fill them over the coming days, or (b) hold off until early next week when everything is hunky dory? Depending on your comments, I'll make the final decision around 3:00 pm CST. Good luck. ...
