All lit up

EXCERPT:  After having been open for four months, we finally FINALLY have lights on the front of the building. Now it actually looks like we're open! Thanks for your help putting them up, Dad! Those lights, by the way, only cost me $30 a piece. I bought them from a farm equipment outlet store, where they're known as "barn lights." Despite their moniker, they look exactly like the lights everyone else has up downtown. Had I bought similar lights through a lighting store, they would've cost me $120+ a piece. Team Moxie scores again! ...

I just split my fingernail in half

EXCERPT:  While I was busy rewinding part one of NINE LIVES, the index finger on my right hand decided it would wander off into the spinning metal vortex of the take up reel. Long story short (I'm fond of that saying, aren't I?), a large piece of metal on the reel gently lifted up my fingernail, kissed the quick, tore the nail in half, and then, ever so gingerly, laid the nail back down where it had originally been. It's amazing how such a small injury can totally incapicate me. It hurts when I type. It hurts when I click ...

Moxie Theatre Lobby

EXCERPT:  Downtown Springfield is primarily known for three things: no parking, violent riots, and Robert E. Smith - folk artist extraordinaire. When he's not being confused for the lead singer of "The Cure," Robert is busy painting the town with his vibrant child-like murals. His work is collected by various folk art museums and, most notably, the Clinton Library... located somewhere in Arkansas. Since becoming our second exhibited artist, Robert has become a fixture at The Moxie. On one particular occasion back in late November, Robert serenaded an audience of 60+ with Christmas carols. Did I mention that Robert is ...

I feel loved

EXCERPT:  This entry was originally posted on Nicole's blog, and I thought (as per her suggestion) it would go good here: Our Moxie movie goers are great people. We had to cancel all our shows on Tuesday due to technical difficulties, so Dan and I put signs up on the door letting everyone know, headed for home (by way of picking up a pizza), and had an early night watching LOST…which turned in to a late night of LOST, but that’s a whole different story. So today a lot of the people came in who were glad to see ...

Not enough H in the D

EXCERPT:  Two things: First - I have so many tasks to finish, I can't keep them all straight. They're all coming out of the closet! I'm sorry... I couldn't resist. That was a terrible joke. I've put a few down on paper, in a handy to-do format, but those rarely work for me. I always end up over-generalizing the task (i.e. "Fix computer" instead of "fix this, then that, then this, then that"). One of the biggest tasks that's been hanging over my head is finishing the new Moxie website. I sit down to start, but something more pressing ...

Rectification of the Vuldronaii

EXCERPT:  After a grueling 7 hour drive, we now have in our possession not one, but TWO working rectifiers. I pretended I was Said from "Lost" as I deftly sketched out a wiring schematic and marked each wire with a masking tape label. Red wire here, green wire there. Black wire here, tin foil there. "She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts, kid. I've added some special modifications myself." Woo hoo! The Moxie is back in business, boys! ...

Mic check

EXCERPT:  All this talk about the red carpet and celebrities has me thinking: wouldn't it be funny to dress up like a reporter and interview Puff Daddy? No? What if, right in the middle of the interview, you bonked him in the nads with the microphone?! Yeah! That would be hilarious! It would make that ultra-satisfying "thunk" noise and everyone would laugh. Of course, you'd probably be killed within the hour by Diddy's entourage, but the endless airtime that the "thunk" moment would get would be well worth it. ...

Rectifier sounds funny

EXCERPT:  Well, it looks like our rectifier has decided to bite the dust. What's a rectifier, you ask? It's a big metal box with lots of wires inside that modulates and sends electricity to the lamphouse, which houses the... you guessed it: the lamp. If the rectifier doesn't work, the lamphouse doesn't work, which means the lamp doesn't work, which means NOTHING works. No light, no picture. No picture, no movie(s). I'm waiting to hear back from our tech to determine what our next course of action will be. Ok, I just heard back from my equipment dealer. He "thinks" ...

M.U.M.P.S. have arrived

EXCERPT:  This just in: cases of M.U.M.P.S. have been reported at The Moxie. People in perfect health have been recorded entering the theater and coming out with a R.A.S.H.. If you don't know what I'm talking about, see here... or better yet, just ask for a M.U.M.P.S. R.A.S.H. next time you're in. They're AWESOME! ...

State of The Moxie #3 - November 2005

EXCERPT:  Ok, enough of the "regular" blog stuff, let's delve back into the numbers, shall we? November was an excellent month for us - the best in our 3.5 month history, to be exact. Several factors contributed to this being a banner month: People were finally starting to hear about The Moxie, thanks to the continued coverage we were receiving in the press. In hopes of lifting our dismal Monday numbers, we started the Matinee Monday program - making all shows on Monday $5.00. We had a lot of bigger movies (i.e. PROOF, HAPPY ENDINGS, THUMBSUCKER, EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED) ...

Customers say the darndest things, episode 2

EXCERPT:  Amazingly enough, the customers involved in this conversation are the exact same ones from "Customers say the darndest things, episode 1." Didn't they learn their lesson the first time? I guess not. GUY 1: So, what's on the agenda for this month? NICOLE: Well, we have PARADISE NOW and KISS KISS, BANG BANG this week. Then we'll be starting SARAH SILVERMAN: JESUS IS MAGIC on Wednesday, and then- GUY 1: (looking hopeful) Wait, wait, wait. "Jesus is magic," what's that about? NICOLE: It's a movie about one of Sarah Silverman's concerts, but with little skits and stuff thrown in. ...

Your favorite Moxie movie of 2005

EXCERPT:  I meant to ask this early, but it slipped my mind. Quite simply, what were your favorite Moxie movies of 2005? For me, I'd say my favorites were, in order: 1. Murderball 2. El Crimen Perfecto 3. Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room 4. Me and You and Everyone We Know 5. Never Been Thawed 6. Proof 7. The Untold Story of Emmett Louis Till I'm assuming that JUNEBUG, THE WILD PARROTS OF TELEGRAPH HILL, and THE SQUID AND THE WHALE would have made it too, but like the majority of people in Springfield, I didn't have ...

The best post thus far of 2006

EXCERPT:  I'm testing myself to see how quickly I can write this post. No glue in this one... just the main points. Here they come. Look out! The M.U.M.P.S. program will be unveiled later this week. The cards and stamps have been designed and are ready to be sent to the printer, who should hopefully be done with them before the week is up. The R.A.S.H.'s (Really Awesome Stamp Holder) are AWESOME, if I do say so myself. I'm still working on Moxie Cinema Online 2.0, and I think I can have it finished before the end of 2006. ...
